Dr David Wheatley Orthopaedic Surgeon

Specialising in surgery of the hip, knee, foot and ankle, general orthopaedic trauma

Mater Hospital, Rockhampton

Consulting in Rockhampton, Gladstone and Yeppoon

I grew up in regional Queensland and gained my medical qualifications at the University of Queensland. My specialist training in orthopaedic surgery was in Brisbane, and I became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) in 2015. My special interest in lower limb surgery led me to subspecialist training under Professor Wilson Wang at the National University Hospital, Singapore.  My time there further developed my skills in both primary hip and knee arthroplasty, as well as more complex revision surgery. Upon my return to Australia, I joined the team of Professor Paul Smith at The Canberra Hospital, adding experience in hip and knee reconstruction, along with exposure to complex trauma and foot and ankle surgery. In 2016 I commenced public practice at The Redcliffe District Hospital and private practice at The Peninsula Private Hospital.

In 2021 I was pleased to accept Dr Michael South’s invitation to practise with him at the Mater Medical Centre in Rockhampton. I have also continued my commitment to the public hospital system with a part-time appointment at The Rockhampton Hospital, teaching and supervising junior doctors and registrars undertaking advanced orthopaedic surgical training.

A major part of my practice is surgery of the hip, knee, foot and ankle.  In addition, I also treat a wide variety of common orthopaedic conditions.

My Practice Philosophy

The outcome of your treatment is critically important to me. I do my utmost to understand and communicate with my patients to help them understand their conditions and their treatment options, along with the benefits and risks of those options. An important part of my job is to keep abreast of the latest technologies and treatment, and to incorporate into my practice those which offer safe and reliable prospects of improvement for my patients. Following your surgery, ongoing review and support are integral to a successful outcome. Readily accessible aftercare is an important benefit I provide as a surgeon based in Rockhampton.

My staff and I are dedicated to delivering professional, modern and caring orthopaedic practice to the Central Queensland community.
